'You are doing like a robot'

Indiers kunnen erg bot overkomen. Op ons komt dat vaak nogal intimiderend over. Na een paar jaar India wen je er gelukkig aan. Ik moet toegeven dat ik deze Indiaase gespreksstijl soms ook toe pas als ik iets gedaan wil krijgen.

Wil je weten hoe het klinkt? Dit is wat een man naast mij aan het tafeltje in een restaurantje riep door zijn telefoon:


Gesprek 1: luid geschreeuw in de telefoon in Hindi. Compleet onduidelijk waar het over gaat.. 


(Hij gaat nu over op (Hindi) Engels)

Gesprek 2: ‘You are doing like a robot, you are not thinking, then I can do it myself. Hello, hello. You are not thinking. You are not understanding the theme and how it should flow. Hello, hello. OK. Please think things through. OK.

(vervolgens wordt gesprek afgebroken zonder gedag te zeggen... Waarom zou je ook?)

Gesprek 3: ‘fine, fine, fine’.

(Gesprek is klaar)

Gesprek 4: .......

(Mmmm. Niemand neemt op. Nog een keertje proberen. Hij zit nu verdwaast voor zich uit te kijken).

Gesprek 5: ‘How did the meeting go? let me call you back, just hold’.

Gesprek 6: ‘Nobody has come. no but you have not done the filing no. Send me a mail. I need a mail from you. But when? I’ve been asking it from yesterday. You told me by yesterday evening I would get it no. Everytime you tell me this. (geschreeuw in Hindi). If it is not clear you should go to your boss. What has happened to that. I can’t work like this with you. Who is that boss of yours?’

Gesprek 7: ‘you have not been practical about this. He has not talked about the rules and regulations. That’s the way it is’.

Hierna hield ik het maar voor gezien. De man zijn eten werd gebracht en hij ging luid smakkend door met zijn telefoontjes.
